[From
FoxNews Charlotte] With Pat McCrory opting out of another re-election bid, Charlotte will soon have a new mayor.
The candidates? City council members Anthony Foxx (D) and John Lassiter (R).
Both say they know how to bring Charlotte's economy back to life.
“The issues that are facing this community most closely align with my background, I’m a businessman,” said Lassiter.
“I’ve done a lot more to focus on our economy on a diverse, growth minded economy,” said Foxx.
And they’re looking to tackle the city’s biggest issues.
"We're having problems managing growth, we're having problems keeping our community safe. Even though we've got a slightly lower crime rate this year, the numbers of crime are still unacceptably high," said Foxx.
"I’ve got innovative ideas about how do we deal with public safety? How do we deal with housing? How to we continue to put dollars they're needed to meet the needs of a growing community, said Lassiter.
To succeed Lassiter may have to win over independents in a city with over two hundred thousand registered democrats.
With no incumbent running it could be a highly competitive race.
“I think the city's ready for some fresh eyes, for some new ideas and new ways of thinking about how this city can move forward,” said Foxx.
“It puts us in a position to have the leadership we need in the future, and perhaps that's different than the leadership Pat McCory's provided, but certainly that's leadership we're gonna need,” added Lassiter.
