An Army National Guard soldier from Matthews was one of two U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan on Friday, the defense department reported over the weekend.
Army Spc. Anthony Green, 28, of Matthews, and Staff. Sgt. Chris Staats, 32, of Fredericksburg, Tex., died of wounds suffered after a roadside bomb attack on their vehicle in Wardak province. Both men were assigned to the 143rd Infantry Detachment, based in Austin, Tex.
They had been deployed to Afghanistan a year ago and were scheduled to return home in about a month, the Associated Press reported.
Green and Staats were the 11th and 12th Texas National Guardsmen to die in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. They are among the 796 members of the U.S. military who have died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001.
