An Army National Guard soldier from Matthews was one of two U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan on Friday, the defense department reported over the weekend.
Army Spc. Anthony Green, 28, of Matthews, and Staff. Sgt. Chris Staats, 32, of Fredericksburg, Tex., died of wounds suffered after a roadside bomb attack on their vehicle in Wardak province. Both men were assigned to the 143rd Infantry Detachment, based in Austin, Tex.

With help from the town of Matthews, the Matthews Historical Foundation plans to buy the Clark House, a home built in the 1880s that sits vacant now at 232 North Trade St. in downtown.
The foundation also hopes to begin work soon to renovate the structure.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Victorian Holiday Teas, hosted by the Matthews Woman's Club Service League, which many in the area say marks the start of their holiday season.
Tickets go on sale Thursday.

Matthews commissioners have told the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department to start construction on most of a new 2.4-mile stretch of Four Mile Creek Greenway.

Matthews Alive! was bigger and better than ever. While all the numbers are not in yet over 220,000 people attended the festival over the Labor Day weekend – a record attendance. Over 2,000 volunteers worked the festival.

Five men are in federal custody after agents said they seized nearly two-thirds of a ton of marijuana Saturday night at an auto shop in Matthews.
The arrests took place along a busy section of East Independence Boulevard and netted drugs with a street value of almost $1 million, according to authorities.

To celebrate the organization’s 20th birthday, Habitat for Humanity of Matthews is looking to build 20 homes in less than two years. The effort will cost more than $1 million, but organizers are ready for the challenge.
