On Saturday, Oct. 31 three families will be speaking with one voice in support of The Unborn Victims of Violence Act For NC. The Unborn Victims bill would bring these families justice by recognizing in law the second victim in these horrific murders: the unborn child. The bill would also allow the State to prosecute for two murders.
WHERE: Chapel Hill Public Library
100 Library Drive
Chapel Hill, NC 27514
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, 11:00 AM
WHO:
Michele Dye: Michele is mother of Lucy Johnson and grandmother to the 15 week old unborn baby she was carrying. Lucy and her unborn baby were brutally murdered July 16, 2008. She was raped, shot twice in the back of the head, and her house set on fire to cover up the crime.
Kevin Blaine: Kevin is the father of Jennifer ("Jenna") Nielsen. Jenna was 8 and 1/2 months pregnant with her unborn son, Ethen, when, on June 14, 2007, they were both murdered in Raleigh, NC, while on her early morning delivery route of USA Today. To date, no killer has been apprehended and they continue to seek public assistance in solving the case.
Effie Steele: Effie is the mother of murdered victim Ebony Robinson, and her beloved grandson, Elijah. Ebony was only 21 years old when she was shot and murdered in Hillsborough, NC. Ebony's unborn son, Elijah, would have been born only a few short weeks later. Ebony and Elijah were laid to rest in two separate caskets.
Jeff Gerber: Grassroots activist and founder of the non-partisan organization" The Justice For All coalition", committed to passing the Unborn Victims of Violence law. Gerber has given the victims' families a voice by organizing press conferences throughout NC.

This Friday May 1st at David W. Butler High School, the twelfth and final edition of the PAWPRINT Literary Magazine will be released. Because of budget cuts the creative writing class will no longer be offered to students as an elective. The class has been in existence since Butler's opening in 1997 and has done more than the production of a magazine compiled of the writings of the class, the student body, staff members and family members. Students in the class have over the years written the school alma mater, petitioned to establish the daily saying of the Pledge of Allegiance in the classroom and obtained flags so every class could have one on display after 9-1-1. They have sponsored the Butler Wish Box, a way to seek out those members of the Butler family in need over the holiday season and attempt to provide for them. They have sent gift boxes to our American soldiers stationed overseas and raised money as well as volunteered their time to help organize boxes of art supplies for the ART BOX KIDS, a local non-profit, that sends these shoe boxes to children in hospitals, orphanages as well as to other destinations where art is seen as therapy for sick and at-risk children.
Students in the class have won numerous writing awards over the years and many have continued to write after graduation. Scott Taube, lead singer and songwriter of the Christian punk rock band, PHILMONT, credits PAWPRINT with his initial inspiration to become a songwriter. DeAnna Griener , a past student and editor, diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma cancer in 1998, has compiled a book of her journals and writings that trace her cancer journey through three remissions to a fourth outbreak. The book THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN: Battling Life and Cancer will be released and on sale sometime this month. FORWARD MOTION, a CD of original music, written and produced by PAWPRINT students, was released in 2005.
The PAWPRINT 2009 Literary Magazine release party , the 12th Annual Authors and Artists Tea, will be held at 1:00 in the Media Center. For the entire history of the teas, Home Depot has been kind enough to donate plants and flowers for decoration including a beautiful Weeping Cherry Tree that was later planted outside the PAWPRINT classroom. Numerous eateries have donated food over the years. This year, Harris Teeter, BoJangles, Brueggar's, Burger King, and Starbucks are only some of the contributors.
The authors and artists featured in this year's book are invited with their families to attend the Tea. Students that have a purchased a copy of the magazine are also invited to the tea to receive their copy. The Butler award winning Jazz Band provided entertainment throughout the event for the last three years and will be returning this year as well. Mr. Charles Wilkerson of Steele Creek Printing has been kind enough to print this year's magazine.
Because this will be the final publication, many class alumni are expected to attend and all are welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara Everitt at Butler High School or at 704-806-1192. Mrs. Everitt is proud to have been the class teacher and sponsor for all 12 years of the creative writing classes and welcomes this last Author and Artist Tea with very mixed emotions.
