The Matthews Civitan Club

Civitans are everyday citizens who come together in communities around the world to socialize, learn and serve their neighbors. Civitan has grown to over 40,000 members in dozens of countries, including youth and college programs. On an international level, Civitan is devoted to improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. Civitan's flagship program is the UAB Civitan International Research Center, the first institution of its kind in the United States to be solely dedicated to research of developmental disabilities.

The Matthews Civitan Club was chartered in August 2009. Our membership consists mostly people who have never participated in a service club before Civitan and have been looking for a place where they can work with others to have a positive impact on our community. We are guided by veteran Civitans from the Monroe and Charlotte clubs as we find our place in the Matthews community.

Matthews Civitan meets every Wednesday through the end of September at Beantown Tavern at Noon for lunch and fellowship. Starting in October, the lunch meeting is held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month with various service project opportunities throughout the month. Please come and learn more about the club and lunch will be on us!

Would you like to know just a little bit more before showing up for a lunch? Please contact Darryl Parker our Membership Committee Chair for a phone call or to meet over coffee or at your office. The best way to contact Darryl is via email at darryl@parkerweb.com.

Current Community Projects of the Matthews Civitan Club

Thompson Child and Family Focus staff pour love and expertise into caring for children and families that society treats as invisible. Each year, over 300 children, many developmentally disadvantaged, benefit from Thompson's continuum of care. Their top priorities are to give young people and their parents the necessary tools to ensure stability and, when possible, to keep families together. Matthews Civitan volunteers with TCFF to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the TCFF facilities and looks for giving opportunities as they arise.

The Matthews Help Center serves and cares for those in our community by providing programs and services that meet life's basic needs. Respect, time and a sense of dignity are given to all who enter. Matthews Civitans are volunteering time, donating money for special projects, donating household items for sale in the thrift store and donating food for their various pantry projects.

Kay Plyler Park Brick Campaign - in support of the Town of Matthews in creating new places for local families to gather and in memory of town employee Kay Plyler, a pass-the-hat campaign is underway to help fund the development of this pocket park through the purchase of a brick. This park will depend on the resources of the community not only financially but physically to be completed and Matthews Civitan is happy to be a supporter.

As of 8-18-09, charter night last night, the club chartered with 30 members - great job Matthews Civitans - but there are two weeks left to get to be a charter member for those of you that have not had the opportunity to join this concerned group of Matthews citizens - please take time to come today- 12:00 to become a part of this movement in your local community service organization.

The Matthews Civitan Club now has 20 charter members, great job you guys, charter night set for Aug. 18, 2009 (come on board-this club has a great start in being the most service oriented club ever seen in these parts). Our members come from all kinds of people who by working together will make a huge difference in the community.

Thanks Darryl for your energy and support.
